Schools' Investment Game 2009

Welcome to UTC's Schools' Investment Game

This Schools’ Investment Game (SIG) gives students a taste of the exciting world of money management through portfolio building and management.

"Money does not grow on trees!" We’ve all heard our parents repeat this phrase at one point or another. Get rich quick schemes almost always end with the investor losing money rather than making it. Unless you’ve just won the lottery or plan to inherit a million dollars from your rich aunty, you’ve got to work for your money and then you've got to make your money work for you.

The Schools' Investment Game was designed as an interactive tool to help students understand the basics of investing. Participants will engage in building and managing an investment portfolio by evaluating stocks and mutual funds, managing risks and practicing many other investment fundamentals.

The History of the Game

The UTC's Schools' Investment Game has been in existence for the past 17 years. Its primary objective was to expose students to the rigors of the financial markets and to expand their understanding of money and capital markets.

The UTC was created to allow persons of modest means to indirectly play a part in the financial markets of Trinidad and Tobago and the region. It has always been our objective to educate young persons in the areas of financial planning. In the eyes of the UTC, education has to start with the youth and with this in mind, we created the Schools' Investment Game which gives students practical exposure to supplement the education that they already receive in the classroom.

In its previous incarnation, UTC's SIG was a paper based game. While this allowed students to participate, there are a number of problems that were inherent to an exercise of this scale being executed purely on paper. In 2005 the game upgraded to take advantage of the world's most popular information sharing tool, the web. This provided students with the ability to make real time adjustments to their portfolios and the game administrators monitor and manage more effectively.
